SD UNITED SETTING UP FOR 2010

Pacific-South side welcomes back 2008 All-WPSL & Mexican WNT star Sophia Perez
SAN DIEGO, CA (04/14/10)
As preparations begin on the West Coast for the Summer 2010 season in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), SD United of the Pacific Conference are well on their way to another prosperous campaign. After setting a new standard of success in 2009 in their third year in the WPSL - finishing with a stellar 11-1-2 record in the Pacific-South Division with a bevy of post-season awards to boot - its not surprising that SD United will see the return of many who were vital to the team's great run of play last summer.
Upper management will remain the same as 2009 Pacific Conference Co-Coach Of The Year Elio Bello returns to the bench alongside assistant Manny Sandoval, while Laura Corbisez will continue to run the front office as General Manager. Many of SD United's 2009 roster are healthy & ready for the 2010 season, who include 2009 All-WPSL Second Team selection Lindsay Browne (Clemson University), 2009 Pacific Conference Goalkeeper Of The Year Michele Dalton (University of Wisconsin), Stephanie Ochs (University of San Diego), Maddie Tantillo (Pepperdine), Rebekah Patrick (Cal-State Fullerton) and Mariette Boyce (Washington State University).
The first game of the season is tentatively slated for Saturday, May 22nd against and will be a local derby against cross-town rival San Diego WFC at Cathedral Catholic High School. SDU's first home game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 6th against Pacific-South newcomer LAFC Chelsea at beautiful Torero Stadium.
Corbisez feels that SD United is set for another run at qualifying for the 2010 WPSL Final Four (July 31-August 1) as Pacific Conference champions: especially with three more signings that already augment a strong returning roster.
"We are very excited to start the 2010 WPSL season with our first home game set for Sunday, June 6th," said Corbisez. "The bulk of our 2009 roster will be back, but with the return of Sophia Perez alongside the awesome additions of Beth Lloyd & Clio Tregear from England, we're really looking forward to a very competitive 2010 WPSL season."
Bello had a skillful offense this season at his disposal last season, but the strength for his side was in their defense which allowed only four goals (including the playoffs). Dalton would get the nod for Pacific GKOTY over Claremont's Alyssa Clark last season, as the Wisconsin Badger started in 11 of 14 matches. It was the second straight year that a SD United goalkeeper was named best in the conference, as Mexican Women's National Team keeper Sophia Perez was awarded that honor in 2008.
Now, SD United will have the services of not just one but two top-notch shot-stoppers, as Perez just recently was one of the last roster cuts of Sky Blue F.C. of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). In 2008, the All-WPSL First Team selection allowed a mere five goals in South Division competition (alongside Player Of The Week honors), as the first-year side had a strong showing but narrowly missed out on post-season play.
The skillful offense that Bello had at his command last season was led by Browne (7 goals), Patrick (6 goals) and Ochs (4 goals), while Browne would end up tied for fourth in the league in scoring (16 points) alongside WPS St. Louis' Kristina Larsen (formerly of West Coast F.C.) and Boston Aztec's Mary-Frances Monroe. Browne's professional dream almost came true as the former Clemson star was selected in the 5th Round of last January's WPS Draft by Los Angeles, but unfortunately the Sol would fold just a month later.
Ochs paced the University of San Diego offense this past fall as their leading scorer (20 points), recording a team-best six goals (three game-winners) and eight assists for the NCAA Tournament participants. Stephanie would be named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-West Second Team for her efforts.
Two of the new singings for this summer's squad - Lloyd & Tregear - will be making the trek to play out on the West Coast, as both star for coach Mick D'Arcy at Central Connecticut State University. Lloyd was named to the Northeast Conference First Team last fall, as the two-time adidas/NEC Player of the Week selection ended up in a league-leading three-way tie for goals scored (11). Tregear started in 20 of 21 matches last season for CCSU, and was named NSCAA All-Northeast Region, Soccer Buzz All-Region and First Team All-NEC in 2008.
Torero Stadium will once again be SD United's home venue this season, as after their match vs. LAFC-Chelsea they will go up against 2009 WPSL National Finalist Ajax America (Sunday, June 13 @ 4:30 p.m.), PSSCV-The Rooks (Saturday, June 19 @ 6:30 p.m.) and San Diego WFC (Sunday, June 20 @ 4:30 p.m.) before heading out on a late-season three-game road trip. The high-noon showdown at Nansen Field vs. Ajax America on Sunday, July 11th could very well be the deciding factor on who hosts the Pacific Conference playoffs (July 24-25) this summer, since it is the South's turn to host the top two sides from each division to compete for the berth into the WPSL Final Four.
